The tradition of picnic blankets was started in the 19th century by The Picnic Society. Since we associate modern picnics with barbecues (BBQ), the picnic blanket is often overlooked. However, if you are planning a picnic out in nature, a picnic blanket is essential. Of course, any old blanket could be a picnic blanket. If the ground is damp though, a picnic blanket with a nylon bottom is better.
